Karate & Tai Chi
Lake Ridge Baptist Church now offers FREE Karate & Tai Chi classes for the community.
Karate
LRBC Karate is dedicated to teaching Uechi-Ryu, a traditional style of Okinawan karate. It was initially called Pangai-noon, which means “half-hard, half-soft.” These classes at LRBC are taught WITHOUT the inclusion of Eastern mysticism, new-age philosophy, or symbolism.
Classes are FREE for ages 8 to adult. However, parents are responsible for purchasing uniforms, patches, belts, and protective gear.
Parents will need to complete registration packets before or at the first class.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi Cheng Man-Ch’ing is a form of Tai Chi for health (not self-defense). Anyone ages 13 and up is invited. The course is FREE, but registration is required as space is limited.
The course focuses on health as its objective. The slow, relaxing movements produce a healthy body exercise and strength regimen. Please note that no Easter Mysticism, beliefs, new age philosophy, or symbolism are taught or used in class.
How Can Tai Chi Help You?
- Muscle Strength: Tai Chi can improve both lower-body and upper-body strength. When practiced regularly, Tai Chi can be comparable to resistance training and brisk walking.
- Flexibility: Tai Chi can boost upper- and lower-body flexibility.
- Balance: Tai Chi improves balance and, according to some studies, reduces falls. Since Tai Chi improves muscle strength and flexibility, it is easier to recover from a stumble. Because fear of falling can make you more likely to fall, some studies have found that Tai Chi training helps reduce that fear.
What to Wear
Please wear comfortable clothing that won’t restrict your range of motion. You can practice barefoot or in lightweight, comfortable, and flexible athletic shoes that won’t slip. Jogging sneakers are unsuitable since they contain additional heel cushioning that will affect balance.
